What to Do if You Get In a Fender Bender

There are about 5.5 million car accidents per year in the United States. Out of this number, 3 million cause injuries, and over 40,000 are fatal. It is, therefore, best to try by all means to avoid getting into a car accident when driving. However, sometimes, no matter how much you try, you will find yourself involved in a fender bender. Here is what you can do if you are involved in one.

Stop

First and foremost, stop your vehicle. If the accident is minor, you might not have to leave the car where it is. Instead, move it off the road to avoid blocking other cars and potentially causing more accidents. Focus on getting your car and yourself to safety. As soon as you are off the road, turn the hazard lights on.

You only have to leave your car where it is if the accident was serious or if driving it will cause further damage. It is not advisable to just drive away after being involved in an accident. Even if you are not the one at fault, you should wait for the authorities before you go. Driving away can be considered a hit-and-run, and this is an offense that can attract severe penalties.

Check to See if Everyone is Fine

Above all else, it is important to ensure that all passengers in the car are not injured. If you have been involved in an accident, check to see if everyone in the car is physically safe and sound. Even a small accident can result in injury. If any of the passengers are hurt, don't hesitate to call 911 instantly.

Call the Police

You should not try to negotiate your way out of an accident without involving the police. This could have some serious consequences later. As soon as you are off the road, call 911 and report the accident. Even if it seems like no one has been injured, you will still need a police officer's report. This can greatly help you with your insurance claim.

Take Photos

As you are waiting for the police officers, take photos of the cars and the scene of the accident. Documenting the damage to your car will be useful later. You might also need to take pictures of the witnesses or other people involved.

Apart from these tips, it is also important to exchange information with the other driver involved in the accident.
